LA Metro’s Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) will invest $80 billion to upgrade and expand the transit system over a 30-year period to include, along with the commuter Metrolink system, 22 transit corridors with 200 total stations. A few of these exciting projects are already soon to begin operation, including the Downtown Regional Connector and the long-awaited connection to the Los Angeles International Airport. Our curriculum emphasizes sustainable mobility and life cycle implications in addition to styling, comfort, safety and responsibility.
Transportation Design
This provides fewer places for dust and dirt to collect and minimizes places for birds to roost, while providing for a clean, minimal interpretation of the ceiling plane. The white coloration of the wall and ceiling panels aids in ‘passive illumination’ by reflecting the available light instead of absorbing it, creating a higher level of visibility for passengers. Satin or semi-gloss finishes were chosen for their diffusive reflective qualities, rather than highly reflective surfaces that could contribute to glare, eyestrain, and confusion for travelers.

The Pine Bluff project is one of 132 planning or capital projects to be funded through $3.33 billion in grant awards in the 2024 program, and the only one from Arkansas.
Trucking Services
This year's rankings have introduced an Economic Mobility Index, which measures the economic status change for low-income students. ACT/SAT scores have been removed from rankings to reflect a general de-emphasis on test scores in the college admissions process. At EXP, we provide transportation planning solutions to create stronger, more resilient communities. Google ride is a mobility concept for 2025 that aims to provide a thoughtful, accessible, AI-driven public transportation system which utilizes riders’ data to provide more personalized experience.
Equipment
Two new concentrations—Alternative Transportation and Vehicle Interiors—offer exposure to the rapidly evolving landscapes of personal and public transportation. Our world-class graduates look beyond car design toward the entire spectrum of career opportunities in transportation design. At Design our OTR drivers average 2,800+ miles per week, earning $200 more a week than the industry average. OTR (Over The Road) drivers average 3,000 miles per week with Regional drivers averaging 2,100 miles per week.
Since 1990, the Los Angeles Country Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) has built and operated the rail and subway system for the greater Los Angeles area. Currently, the system consists of 99 stations serving seven lines and over 100 miles of track. Our students understand the challenges facing all aspects of transportation and embrace these challenges as opportunities. Over 30 years later, Design Transportation has grown stronger and more efficient with over 100 tractors. Our location within Southern California's transportation design hub offers unique access to some of the country’s most advanced automotive design and alternative energy studios. As an ArtCenter student, you'll build your portfolio and your career while pursuing your degree. Beauty, innovation and meaning in transportation design trace their roots to ArtCenter. Our graduates lead design studios at most of the major automotive manufacturers around the world.
Within 2021, we’ve replaced more than 40% of our fleet, ensuring our drivers a comfortable in the best equipment possible. Designs for the station furnishings required a balance between the demands of this high use/high abuse environment and the desire for a simple, minimal, clean, and modern design aesthetic. A singular form, material, and finish for the furnishings, along with common placement within each station, creates a coherent design narrative across the system. The floors are poured-in-place epoxy terrazzo that is charcoal-colored and combined with pieces of white marble and mother of pearl. The dark colored terrazzo is intended to help conceal stains and create a visual contrast with the lighter colored walls and ceilings, helping assist visually impaired travelers in managing their movement through the station. At the same time, the marble and mother of pearl give the terrazzo a visual texture that not only assists in masking stains but raises the light reflectance of the flooring and creates visual interest.
Managers, planners, dispatchers, and drivers all work together with the goal of providing excellent, on-time service with a smile.
